Very Scarce signature of the inventor of the 1st U.S. Postage Stamp
WINDSOR, Henry Thomas (1746-1848) Owner of The City Dispatch Company of New York City which issued the 1st postage stamp in the United States. A black/grey 3 cent stamp depicting the head of George Washington. In April 1841 Windsor left Liverpool reaching New York in May. He was familiar with the English Postal System, so he decided to establish a private post in New York City. A few months after founding The City Dispatch Company he sold it to the U.S. Government. After the sale, Windsor and his wife returned to London. Windsor’s stamp followed Great Britain’s Penny Black by only 21 months. His stamp was the 1st postage stamp issued in the Western Hemisphere. Very scarce front of an envelope stamped in red “Free.” Free franking signature of Henry Windsor at the bottom left corner. Affixed to a larger leaf. In V/G condition...............$250.00
