American Artist Noted for Illustrating Charlotte’s Web and other Classics
WILLIAMS, Garth (1912-1996). American artist who came to prominence in the American postwar era as an illustrator of children’s books. Many of the books he illustrated have become classics. It is estimated Williams illustrated 97 books during his lifetime. Some of his accomplishments illustrating are Stuart Little, Charlotte’s Web (1952), the Little House series and Little Golden Books. He also drew for the new Yorker and Harper’s. Later in his life he lived in a small town in Mexico. It was part of a colony of expatriates who rebuilt homes in the ruins of the silver mines of colonial Mexico. His studio was in his home. Williams is noted for his work in charcoal and graphite pencils. Living in an obscure town in Mexico, signatures of Garth Williams are quite uncommon. So uncommon, prices for his autographs are not even listed in autographs price guides. An original ink drawing from Charlotte’s Web sold for $95,600 in 2010. A first edition signed copy of Charlotte’s Web is being offered elsewhere for $17,500. Original ink sketch, full length of a woman sitting in an elaborate chair.
