WELLMAN, Walter (1858-1934). Aviation pioneer, aeronaut, explorer and journalist (founded the Cincinnati Post). In early 1900’s he led expeditions to the Arctic regions in an airship. Attempted three airship flights over the North Pole (1906, 07 and 1910). Failed to cross the Atlantic ocean in the Airship “America”. Broke existing world records for time and distance by airship (1008 miles in 72 hours). Succeeded in sending back the first ever wireless transmission of radio messages. Autograph letter signed, one page, on his name imprinted stationery. New York, n.d., In part: “We had no mail aboard the America on our flight over the Atlantic. Have had so many calls for souvenirs, I now have left only three things I must keep for my family...” Signed in full, slight wear along right edge of letter otherwise a very good example. Wellman’s signature is not common and he is quite scarce in handwritten letters........... $295.00
