Noted Explorer and Aeronaut-Built two Airships
WELLMAN, Walter (1858-1934). American explorer and aeronaut. Established a weekly newspaper in Sutton, Nebraska and established the Cincinnati Evening Post. In 1892 he marked with a monument the landing of Christopher Columbus. In 1894 he led two expeditions, one to latitude 81N and another to 82N. During Sept. 1907 he made an attempt to reach the North Pole in an airship. He created the airship’s America and Akron. Bank check payable on the Riggs National Bank, Washington, D.C. May 3, 1909.
