COMMITTED SUICIDE IN THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE

VARGAS, Getulio  (1882-1954).  Brazilian Political leader and President. He governed as provisional president until his election in 1934. Vargas ruled Brazil from 1932-1945.  In October 1945 the people staged a revolution  which forced his resignation. In 1950, he ran for president once again and was elected. His was inaugurated on January 31, 1951 and his term was for five years. During August 1954, the Air Force and Army Generals demanded his resignation.  Vargas took a leave of absence on August 24, 1954 and committed suicide in his bedroom in the palace on that same day.  First Day cover commemorating the First Day of Issue of the United Nations postage stamp. Postmarked, United Nations, June 12, 1953, New York. Vargas has hand signed this cover with a wonderful large full signature. An impressive item.
