World Famous Expert on Maps
TOOLEY, R.V. (1898-1986). British map dealer, authority on early maps and cartography. Author of “Maps and Map Makers” founder of Map Collectors Circle and published “The Map Collectors Magazine.” He is one of the very few to describe how Antarctica has been depicted over the century. Autograph letter signed, two very full pages, on his name imprinted letterhead. Dated 7/5/86 just 100 days before his passing. He writes in part: “I have just spent a very pleasant afternoon with Forbes Society talking maps and maintaining that good old booksellers occupation of keeping it going with spirit.” He goes on to be happy that he has been made an honorary member of a society...”I felt very flattered nothing would give me more pleasure for I think that after a while it will become one of the most important and active of those promoting the influence of the map world...” He talks about more information about societies and their membership.
