February 5, 1918 Thompson Became the First Person in U.S.
Uniform to Down an Enemy Plane
THOMPSON, Lt. Stephen W. (1894-1977) American aviator and gunner. Observer based in Amanty, France during WWI with the First Aero Squadron. On February 5, 1918 he secured the first air-to-air victory ever scored in combat by a U.S. serviceman. On July 28, 1918 he scored two more victories over Germany before being shot down. He landed behind allied lines with a bullet in his right leg which he removed with a pocketknife. U.S. Air Force Museum brochure depicting a WWI fighter plane on the cover. Across the top of the front-page Thompson has written: “1st Lt. Stephen W. Thompson 12th Observation Squadron.” In very good condition along with a four-page biography of Thompson.
