Napoleon’s Foreign Minister
TALLEYRAND-PERIGORD, Charles Maurice de (1754-1838). French statesman and diplomat. Worked successfully from the regime of Louis XVI through the French Revolution and then under Napoleon I, Louis XVIII, Charles X and Louis-Philippe. In March 1778 he received a degree in theology and in 1779 he was ordained. Later he was excommunicated by the Pope. He became Foreign Minister when Napoleon was proclaimed Emperor. He accompanied Napoleon to a Congress of European sovereigns in Prussia. In Prussia he had secret talks with Tsar Alexander I, urging him to oppose Napoleon. In 1830 he helped Louis-Philippe to become king. Autograph letter signed, one page, on watermarked paper 183 (last number runs off paper). To a Dear Mr. Chadron, in French, in several lines Talleyrand invites Mr. Chadron to dine at his house.
