Rare Signature of Thomas Talbot
TALBOT, Thomas (1771-1853). Irish born Canadian soldier and politician. He moved to Canada in 1791. He laded in a spot called Port Talbot and built a log cabin, copper mil, hen houses, blacksmith shop and a barn. He implemented a land settlement program along the shore of Lake Erie. A petition for 5,000 acres was granted to him in 1809. Settlers began to arrive in 1809 and Talbot ruled as a absolute. He gave out parcels of land to people of his choosing. For every settler he placed on 50 acres of land he received an additional 200 acres for himself. He created a road building provision and the settlement became known for its good roads especially the one named Talbot Road. By the 1820’s he organized the construction of a 300 mile road linking the Detroit River and Lake Ontario. He settled 50,000 people on 650,000 acres. Many of the settlers were American. Talbot’s abuse of power was a contributing factor in the Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837. Talbotville a community in Southwold, Ontario is named after him. He lies buried in Port Talbot overlooking his beloved Lake Erie. A very scarce three word sentiment and full signature on a card. Ample margins for framing..............................$175.00
