Nazi Propaganda Goes South
TAFT, Hessy (1934- ) Born in Berlin, this baby was the “Perfect Aryan Child.” Her picture was used in Nazi propaganda. In 1935 her photo won a contest to find the most beautiful Aryan baby. Her image was widely distributed by the Nazi party in magazines and on post cards. Her family was not aware the photographer decided to enter the photo in a contest. Their daughter was selected by Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels as the winner. The photographer knew the family was Jewish but deliberately entered the photograph in the contest because he wanted to make the Nazi’s look ridiculous. Poster with a portrait of Baby Hessy on the cover of a German magazine. In addition on the poster is a portrait of Hessy Taft as she looked some years ago. Affixed to the poster is a card 3”x4.5” with a portrait of Baby Hessy which Taft has signed: “Best wishes, Hessy Taft.” A remarkable historical item. In 1938 her parents were briefly arrested by the SS. Months later the family immigrated to France, then moved to Cuba and onto the United States. While Hessy was living in Germany, if the Nazi’s knew she was Jewish, she would have been killed. in fine condition..................................$87.50
