Accompanied Ronald Reagan in a German Cemetery Creating a Political Firestorm
STEINHOFF, Johannes (1913-1994). German Luftwaffe Fighter Ace in WWII. One of the highest scoring pilots credited with 176 victories. Awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords. He challenged Goring’s leadership thus he spent time in internal exile. His career came to an end when his plane blew a tire and crashed on take-off. Steinhoff spent two years in an a hospital because of severe burns. Later, he became military commander of Nato. Many may remember in May 1985 when Ronald Reagan visited a German cemetery in Bitburg. He was accompanied by Johannes Steinhoff. This controversial visit awakened passions that would place his administration in a political firestorm. Wonderful lithograph by artist Janet Keck, published by King’s Crown Gallery in 1989. Limited to 500 numbered copies signed by both Janet Keck and Johannes Steinhoff. Steinhoff is head and shoulders pose in uniform wearing his Knight’s Cross. Measures appx: 19”x25”.
