STEINHOFF, Johannes (1913-1994). German fighter pilot during WWII. One of the first to fly the Messerschmitt ME 262 in combat. He was shot down 12 times. High scoring Ace credited with 176 victories. He is also remembered for walking with President Reagan in 1985 and placing a wreath at the Bitberg Cemetery. Steinhoff during the war had a tire problem while taking off at an airfield. The plane crashed and he spent 2 years in a hospital because of severe burns which visibly left many scars. His eyelids were rebuilt by a British surgeon.
