7th Prime Minister of Israel
SHAMIR, Yitzhak (1915-2012). Seventh Prime Minister of Israel serving two terms (1983-84) & (1986-92). A Zionist leader, he opposed British control of Palestine. He was imprisoned but escaped. He plotted to assassinate a British Minister but was caught and imprisoned in Africa. He escaped through a 200 foot tunnel. He received a forged passport and returned to Israel after the Israeli Declaration of Independence in 1948. His parents survived the holocaust only to be murdered by anti-Semitic thugs.
