SHAMGAR, Meir (1925-2019). Chief Justice of the Israeli Supreme Court (1983-1995). He was arrested in 1944 for anti-British activities. He was interred in Africa in a detention camp. His fellow inmate was Yitzhak Shamir. In 1948 he enlisted in the I.D.F. and participated in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. He rose to the rank of Brigadier General. Shamgar chaired the Commission of Inquiry into the murder of Yitzhak Rabin. He designed the legal infrastructure of the Israeli Military Government in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
