Hero of the Battle of Santiago de Cuba and the Spanish-American War
SCHLEY, Winfield Scott (1839-1911). Rear-Admiral in the United States Navy. During the Civil War he was made master and assigned to the Potomac. He served on the gun boat U.S.S. Winona and later on the U.S.S. Richmond. He participated in the capture of Port Hudson, Louisiana in 1863. In 1884, he commanded the relief mission and rescued Adolphus Greely and his 24 companions after passing through 1400 miles of ice. Schley was not only the hero of the battle of Santiago de Cuba but also a hero of the Spanish American War. Closing of a letter with a three word sentiment: “Very Truly Yours" W.S. Schley Rear-Admiral U.S.N.” Affixed to an album page witch also contains a portrait of Schley as Rear-Admiral. In fine condition..................$95.00
