Received the Distress Signals From The Titanic He is a pioneer of American radio and television. In 1912, he was working as a radio operator at Wanamaker’s Department Store in New York City. He received the distress messages from the Titanic. He claims he stayed up all that night and for three days he stayed by his telegraph key. President William H. Taft and the whole world waited to hear from David Sarnoff. President Taft was stunned learning the news and stayed at the telegraph office in The White House. Sarnoff is credited with Sarnoff’s Law. Fantastic content letter on the letterhead of the War Department, Office of the Chief Signal Officer, 6 December 1944. Sarnoff writes to Major Walter R. Brown, PRD - S.H.A.E.F. “Today I received your letter of November 17th and a very few minutes ago I received notification that the United States Senate has confirmed my promotion to the grade of Brigadier General. Quite a day! I was immediately interested in all that you had to say and I shared the pertinent parts of the information you have given me in the letter with Major General Frank E. Stoner, Chief, Army Communications Service. I am retaining your letter for my private collection as a memento of the days we spent together in England and on the Continent during an important part in the History of our Nation. I knew that Captain Harry Butcher would bring to the job his great talents, and I am sure that everything will go better and that all will be happier because of his presence there. I appreciate all the assistance I had from you and look forward to seeing you back again with your family on this side, and I hope that it will not be too long before the job over there is finished... David Sarnoff, Brigadier General, USA, Deputy Chief, Army Communications Service”. Most likely the first letter written and signed as Brigadier General. Two file hole, light foxing otherwise in fine condition........$325.00 |
