Prime Minister of Japan, Assassinated
SAITO, Viscount Makoto (1858-1936). Japanese Admiral, aide-de-camp to the Emperor during the Chinese/Japanese War (1894-95). Served in the Russo/Japanese War (1904-05), Minister for the Navy (1913-14), Served as Governor General of Korea twice (1919-27) and (1929-31). Prime Minister of Japan (1932-34). Assassinated on Feb.26, 1932 by a group of young Army Officers. Autograph letter signed, two pages on the imprinted stationery of Shimonoseki Fusan Ferry, Dec.11, 1929 to Arctic Explorer and General A.W. Greely. Saito writes in part: “...I also feel grateful for the paper cuttings you have so often sent to me. I am now going to Tokyo on business and expect to return to Seoul in two weeks. My wife is staying in Tokyo at present and I intend to take her to Korea when I return. I have sent you a copy of ‘Korea of Today’ a few days ago hoping you will open it at your leisure....” Signed “M. Saito.” In excellent condition...............................$395.00
