Highest Salaried Sports Writer of His Time
RUNYON, Damon (1884-1946). Author of short stories dealing with the New York Underworld. War correspondent for the Hearst papers. Highest salaried sports writer during his time. Best known as “The World’s Greatest Reporter.” Member of the boxing hall of Fame. Rare typed letter signed in pencil (Damon), 3 very full pages, Memorial Hospital, May 16, 1944. In part: “...your letter was a bright ray of sunshine, getting along nicely after they complete certain details of the operation... I have to return to California to complete my deal with 20th Century Fox... my faith in the human race is strengthened...it took something akin to a miracle when I came in here after those plumbers on the coast had worked on me. I wrote a letter to the Chief asking him that he switch my column to the Journal American... if I can get no better break than that, I might as well fold up as a columnist... I see no future for me on the Mirror. I am told that I now look better than ever before because of the enforced rest but everyone around me got all run down. Mike Todd kept me up extra late telling me lies about how he quit playing the horses... ” In fine condition with extraordinary content. And a few corrections in his hand. Anything signed by Damon Runyon is considered uncommon........................875.00
