First Jew Admitted to the House of Lords
ROTHSCHILD, Nathan Mayer (1777-1836). German born Jewish financier; founded the successful London Branch of his father’s banking empire in 1798. Nathan was a prime financier of the Napoleonic Wars and he made an enormous fortune on the London Exchange with his early knowledge of Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo. It is said that Rothschild received the news before the government. Nathan Rothschild was the first Jew admitted to the House of Lords. Fine signature removed from the bottom portion of a letter.
