ROSS, John (1790-1866). Indian name was Coowescoowe. American Indian Chieftain who served with Andrew Jackson against the Creeks (1812). President, National Council of Cherokees (1819-1826); resisted policy of moving the Cherokee Nation to Indian Territory. He is known as the “Cherokee Moses” who led his people in their exodus from their land. In 1838 Ross’s wife died while emigrating on the Trail of Tears. Later he signed a treaty with the Confederacy. Ross as Chief made several trips to Washington and had meetings with President Lincoln. Ross was Chief of the United Cherokee Nation (1839-1866). Manuscript document signed, one page, oblong, Executive Department, March 6, 1857. To the National Treasurer Lewis Ross. Chief Ross authorizes payment of $17.44 to O. Liepe from the general school fund for work as a Steward in the Female Seminary. Near fine condition............. $1850.00
