New York’s Noted Underworld Figure
ROSE, Jack (1875-1947) Born Jacob Rosenzweig. American gambler, nickname Bald Jack Rose. He founded the “Rosebuds” early minor league baseball team in the Connecticut League. Owner of a palatial gambling establishment in New York City known as “The Rosebud” a known underworld hangout. The cocktail “Jack Rose” named in his honor which was very popular during the 1920’s. In Ernest Hemingway’s 1926 classic “The Sun Also Rises” the narrator drinks a “Jack Rose” cocktail in Paris. Lt. Charles Becker of the “Gambling Squad” raided “The Rosebud.” In exchange for not closing it down Rose agreed to pay 25% of his weekly income. In 1912, Becker went on trial for murder of Herman Rosenthal, a notorious gangster and gambling house operator. Rosenthal was known as “The Jewish Gangster and Jewish Mafia.” This was the most sensational murder case New York had ever seen. Jack Rose turned states evidence and Becker was electrocuted (1915). Rose later reformed and became an expert poker player. He was offered $30,000 to write a book on poker but refused. He toured the United States in clubs and schools lecturing against gambling to boys. Slip affixed to a larger page where Jack Rose has signed his name adding East Orange H.S.
