ROOSEVELT, Theodore (1858-1919). Twenty-sixth President of the United States. Roosevelt was Governor of New York and Assistant Secretary of the Navy under President McKinley. Roosevelt was an author, explorer, historian, and soldier. In addition, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906. He was also the president who named the president’s home, White House. Previously, it had been called The Executive Mansion. Later he changed the name of White House to The White House. Oct. 1910, he was the first U.S. President to fly in an airplane. A year after leaving The White House he went of safari to Mombasa, the Belgian Congo where his team killed and trapped 11,400 animals. Roosevelt’s face is included in the Mount Rushmore memorial. He is the only president to receive a Medal of Honor. A very rare postcard of his home “Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay, New York. Most interesting it was mailed to a collector with a U.S. One Cent postage stamp. A circular postal cancellation “Oyster Bay, N.Y. Sep 21, 1910.” In the correspondence area of the post card, Roosevelt has signed his name, in full, adding “Sagamore Hill.” This was his home since 1885 until his death.
