ROBINSON, Jackie (1919-1972 ) American baseball player who became the first African American to play in Major League Baseball. On April 15, 1947 the Brooklyn Dodgers started him at first base this ended racial segregation in baseball. It also contributed significantly to the Civil Rights Movement. Robinson played in 6 World Series. In 1949 he won the Most Valuable Player Award. He was inducted into the Baseball hall of Fame in 1962.
