The First Colored Member of the U.S. House of Representatives The First Colored Full Term Senator RAINEY, Joseph F. (1832-1937). First colored member of Congress. Very scarce autograph letter signed, one page, Washington, DC, Feb. 5, 1871 to Mr. John J. Brown, Jr. Excellent content: “t your request I send you this autograph letter not believing that I am yet distinguished but simply to gratify your curiosity., Respectfully, J.F. Rainey.” Rainey was admitted to the U.S. House of Representatives on December12, 1871. Together with a portrait of these two men, clipped from a magazine. BRUCE, Blanche K. (1841-1898). Born a slave, successful plantation owner, politician who was a Senator from Mississippi. First colored Senator to complete a full term (1875-1881). Fine ink signature on a card.
