Father of American Illustration
PYLE, Howard (1853-1911). American illustrator, author primarily of books for young children. He founded his own school of art an illustration. His 1883 classic “The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood” remains in print. He is considered the “Father of American Illustration.” He founded the first school in the nation for illustration at the Drexel Institute. Many of the greatest illustrators attended his classes.
