POLK, Sara Childress (1803-1891). First Lady and wife of the 11th President of the United States, James K. Polk. She serves as First Lady from 1845 to 1849. She barred dancing, card games and hard liquor at official receptions. She also refused to attend horse races and go to the theatre. She did not dance during her inaugural ball and she hosted the first Thanksgiving Dinner at the Executive Mansion. After leaving the Executive Mansion she left by horse and carriage to her new home “Polk Place” in Nashville, Tn. She lived there for 42 years. Fabulous signature “Mrs. James K.
