Founded Pitcairn Aviation which later became Eastern Airlines
PITCAIRN, Harold F. (1897-1960). American aviation inventor and pioneer. He founded the Autogyro Company of America. Founded Pitcairn Aviation which later became Eastern Airlines. He also founded Pitcairn Aircraft Company which manufactured Air Mail planes and autogyros. In 1931, one of his pilots landed an autogyro on The White House lawn as President Hoover was awarding Pitcairn the Collier Trophy. On April 24, 1960 at the age of 62, Pitcairn committed suicide in his home in Philadelphia. Very uncommon typed letter signed, one page on his name imprinted letterhead. August 25, 1932 to Henry L. Stevens, National Commander of the American Legion. Pitcairn writes in part: “…Recently when I was approached by the American Legion for funds to aid in finding employment for their men, I wrote that I was expending considerable sums to continue the employment of men in our factory. I believe that contributions for the purpose you ask should come from people who are not financially responsible for holding an organization together, and have means to help out.” Signed with a fantastic bold signature. Anything signed by Pitcairn can be considered rather scarce. Excellent condition..............SOLD
