PINKERTON, William A. (1846-1923). American detective. One of the principals of the famous detective agency. He entered the Secret Service Division of the U. S. Army (1861) and served in the Civil War chiefly in the Army of the Potomac. He tracked some of the most colorful criminals of the Victorian era. Head of the Western Division of Pinkerton’s detective Agency. Very scarce typed letter signed, to William Curley on West Madison Street in Chicago, Sept. 25, 1923 on his personal letterhead just two months before his death. In part: “..I was unable to attend your surprise party....I intended to go but was detained at an important conference in connection with a hold-up and robbery of a jewelry salesman in the Italian quarter, otherwise I would certainly have been with the rest of your friends to tender you congratulations on your long years of service with the paper...” Signed “Wm.
