PERKINS, Frances (1880-1965). American workers-right advocate. First woman appointed to the U.S. Cabinet. She became the 4th U.S. Secretary of Labor. She established the first minimum wage and overtime laws for American workers. She defined the standard 40-hour work week. Perkins privately held a romantic relationship with the woman who founded The Junior League. They lived together in Washington, D.C. until her lover’s death. Very scarce A.L.S. three full pages, Sept.5, 1947 to Mrs. Butler. Fine friendly letter stating she did not get the invitation in time for the shower for Paula Chopin. “So, you got no acknowledgement- Much regret.” She adds she’s going back to Washington and hopes Mrs. Butler can come over sometime. Signed using her marriage name “Frances Perkins Wilson.” Most unusual. Perkins is scarce in A.l.S........$125.00
