British “Bobbies” Named for Him

PEEL, Sir Robert  (1788-1850). British Statesman and Prime Minister (1834-35) and (1841-1846). He is regarded as The Father of Modern British Policing. He is one of the Founders of the modern Conservative Party.  During 1843 he was the target of a failed assassination attempt but his personal secretary was killed by the insane person.  This led to the formation of the criminal defense of insanity law. Front of an envelope, London, January 5, 1835 free franking signature “Robert Peel” as Prime Minister. Rubber stamp cancellation: “Free 5 JA 5 1835.” In fine condition............$75.00
