PEABODY, George (1795-1869) Disciple of Benjamin Franklin. American financier, called The Father of Modern Philanthropy. He lived in London which was the Capital of world finance. He took on Julius Spencer Morgan as a partner in 1854 and their joint business would become J.P. Morgan and Co. Peabody was awarded the Congressional Gold medal. He died in London and his funeral and temporary grave was held in Westminster Abbey with the approval of Queen Victoria. Uncommon autograph note signed on a card affixed to a larger page. Peabody writes: “Edinberg- I am glad to see that the Pusia was out safe when the Africa sailed. Truly yours, George Peabody.” On the card below is signed “with ….Morgan’s compliments.” A note below that is written: “Mr. George Peabody’s autograph as above was given me by J.S. Morgan esq Merchant of 22, Old Broad St. who was sometime his partner. RDW.”
Together with a handwritten listing of some of the mourners who attended Peabody’s Funeral at Westminster Abbey, Friday Nov. 12, 1869. Names include J.S. Morgan and Dr. Gull, medical attendant who in 1871 treated the Prince of Wales for typhus and was appointed the Prince’s regular physician and later became the physician ordinary for Queen Victoria. Dr. Gull is mentioned in different magazines as being considered Jack the Ripper. An interesting assemblage in very good condition.....................$375.00
