First President of Independent Cuba
PALMA, T. Estrada (1835-1908). Cuban revolutionist. Active participant in the ten years War (1868-1878). In 1878 Palma was captured and imprisoned. Cuba was under a puppet regime controlled by the United States. T. Estrada Palma, an American citizen was elected the First President of Cuba. He held that office from May 20, 1902 until 1906. Palma was re-elected in 1906 but in August of that same year a revolution broke out against his government. He resigned in September. His full signature “T. Estrada Palma” and adding in his hand: “Central Valley, N.Y. February 12, 1902.” In three months he would become President of Cuba.
