OWENS, Jesse (1913-1980). African-American Olympic athlete who won four gold medals in the Nazi-hosted 1936 Olympic Games. He defied Hitler disproving Hitler’s theory that blacks were an inferior race. Owens received a standing ovation by 100,000 spectators. Hitler left the stadium.
