During WW1 Her Women of England’s Active Service League brought in some 20,000 volunteers
ORCZY, Baroness Emma “Emmuska” (1865-1947). Born in Hungary moved to Britain. Novelist, playwright, painter best known for her series of novels featuring the “Scarlet Pimpernel.” Some of her paintings are exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. She wrote detective stories during WW1. She formed the Women of England’s Active Service League aimed at recruitment of female volunteers for active service. Some 20,000 women joined. Lengthy two page autograph letter signed. Dated 28.v11.33 she writes in part: “...There are few things I should like better than to meet the members of the American Women’s Club and have a talk for your book…Unfortunately we hardly ever go to Paris these day though we come to England every year we have taken to doing the journey to an from Monte Carlo by sea. My husband and I both love the sea & a week’s complete rest....by all means send me a book to autograph…..yrs. v. sincerely Emmuska Orczy.” In excellent condition and rather scarce in a.l.st..............................$185.00
