Father of the Atom Bomb OPPENHEIMER, Robert  (1904-1967).  American physicist, director of atomic energy research at Los Alamos (Manhatttan Project).  His work and direction led to the invention of the first atomic bomb that was used to end WWII.  Plate block of four U.S. 8 cent Robert Goddard stamps depicting a portrait of Goddard and a rocket leaving a launch pad.  Signed: “Robert Oppenheimer” on the selvage.
