Amazing Cartoonist Cover
SCHULZ, Charles (1922-2000) American cartoonist, created the comic strip “Peanuts” in 1950. He is regarded as one of the most influential cartoonists of all time. At its height the strip appeared in over 2,600 newspapers in 75 countries. Schulz has drawn a wonderful sketch of “Snoopy” on this First Day Cover. Three other very noted cartoonists have also signed and drawn sketches. Brad Anderson (1924-2015) has drawn Maraduke, Fred Lasswell (1916-2001) who was the longest running artist working on the same comic strip drew his hillbilly character Snuffy Smith and dated his sketch 10/21/85. Bil Keane (1922-2011) drew his character “Billy” from Family Circus. The Schulz and Anderson sketches are in black ink. Keane’s sketch is in blue ink and Lasswell used 4 colors in his sketch. Very few multi cartoonists sketches on a FDC include a Charles Schulz. This is the first cover with a Schulz signature and sketch that we have seen on a FDC honoring Walt Disney.
