Telegram to Benito Mussolini
NOBILE, Umberto (1885-1978). Italian explorer and aeronautical engineer. Pioneer in Arctic exploration. Amundsen asked Nobile to build an airship to fly to the North Pole. Benito Mussolini backed the project as it would demonstrate Italy’s technological prowness and show the growing powers of the Fascist state. Nobile designed the airship “Norge” and was also the pilot. In 1926 Nobile became a national hero of Mussolini’s Fascist state when he piloted the “Norge” over the North Pole with Amundsen and Ellsworth. The “Norge” was the first aircraft to reach the North Pole.
