The Famous Opening First Words The First James Bond
NELSON, Barry (1917-2007). American actor noted for being the first actor to portray Ian Fleming’s secret agent James Bond. He preceded Sean Connery’s “Dr. No” by eight years.
Nelson played Bond in “Casino Royale” on October 21, 1954 along with Peter Lorre as Le Chiffre. Bond foils the sinister Le Chiffre by beating him at baccarat. In the opening scene shots are fired at Bond and he responds that they weren’t asking for his autograph. Nelson appeared on Broadway and in many films including “Airport” and “The Shinning”. Barry Nelson lived part of the time in New York City. It took us a few years to convince him to attend our New York City autograph show as a guest signer. We had asked him for a photo of himself as “Bond” to reproduce for those who attended the show, and his reply was there aren’t any. He appeared for a few hours and this is one of only four of these cards he reluctantly signed during the show. Card is 3”x5” plain white and Nelson has handwritten: “Yeah-it wasn’t my autograph either” signed Barry Nelson. Nelson was very elusive as he spent much of his time in France restoring a castle. The pictures below are of Nelson and his wife during the show. The pictures are not included with this card...........$95.00
