Commanded the boats that created
“bombs bursting in air” and “the rocket’s red glare”

NAPIER, Admiral Sir Charles (1786-1860) Fought in the Napoleonic Wars and in the Anglo-American War of 1814.  Napier commanded the rocket boats that bombarded Ft. McHenry and Baltimore, providing both the “bombs bursting in air” and “the rocket’s red glare” of  Francis Scott Key’s  American national anthem. He saw service in Portugal (1833-34), Syria (1840-41). During May 1847, he took command of the western squadron.  Memorandum, 6”x8”   HMS  St. Vincent, Cove of Cork 16 May 1848, signed “Chas Napier” as Rear Admiral and Commander in Chief, to Captain Willaim Hall of HM Steamer Dragon ordering him to receive an “Inspector of Machinery afloat”  In fine condition..................$225.00
