Very Rare A.L.S. James Morier
MORIER, James (1782-1849). British diplomat and author. Best noted for his novels about the Qajar dynasty in Iran. He is famous for the Hajji Baba series. His “Adventures of Hajji Baba of Ispahan” is about travelling through Kaleybar in the early 19th century. Kaleybar is now a tourist destination. In 1812 he published an account of his experiences under the title “A Journey Thru Iran.” The Adventures of Hajji Baba became an American movie produced in 1954. It starred John Derek and Amanda Blake. Operation Hajji Baba was a humanitarian airlift conducted in 1952 by the United States Air Force. James Morier is credited with introducing the word “bosh”, meaning absurd or foolish talk into the English language. Autograph letter signed, 2 very full pages, Brighton (Australia) 11 May 1840. He writes in part: “I really would not trouble you with my petty concern when I know how very valuable your time was- I had intended to have written to you but on second thought....I am ignorant....still I agree with you he does not understand his own interests. I had withdrew what I had sent to him...I was asked to write for a Charity Bazar so I appropriated my Tale to which I hope may turn out a better purpose I really quite grieve that I should have given you all this trouble for writing- pray forgive....James Morier.” Left side of letter tipped to a larger leaf, otherwise in very good condition. Together with a scarce full length engraved portrait of James Morier, perfect for framing.
