MONTMORENCY, Baron Mathieu de (1767-1826) French statesman during the French Revolution. He served with his father in the American Revolution, Governor of Compiegne. After the Battle of Waterloo and final defeat of Napoleon he was made a Peer of France. Later he was known as the Coate de Chambord. He fought in America alongside Lafayette. He was on the jury at the trial of Marshall Ney. His brother was guillotined in 1794 during the Reign of Terror. One word from a letter with his scarce signature dated 1822.
