MONDAVI, Robert (1913-2008). The Father of California Winery’s. Pioneer vintner who put California wine country on the map. During 1966 he opened the winery that would turn Napa Valley into a world center of the industry. Mondavi engaged in the first French/American wine venture when he formed a partnership with Baron Philippe de Rothschild. In 1982 Mondavi and Baron Philippe began label design. For the joint venture the partners agree to choose a name of Latin origin, allowing for easy recognition in both languages. Baron Philippe announces his choice, “OPUS.” Two days later he proposes an additional word: “OPUS ONE.” A single case of the joint venture wine sold for $24,000 at the first Napa Valley Wine Auction- the highest price ever paid for a California wine. In 1985-87 sales averaged around 11,000 cases a year. Opus One becomes known as America’s first ultra-premium wine.
