MITCHELL, Maggie (1836-1918) was a very popular American actress. Mitchell excelled in comedy roles. She was a confederate sympathizer. She performed at the inauguration of President Jefferson Davis. She entertained the CSA Government. She was the girl friend and dated John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of President Lincoln. Her photograph was found in Booth’s wallet when he was shot after being pursued for Lincoln’s assassination. Her visiting card printed on one side: “Mrs. Charles Abbott/Maggie Mitchell.” On the verso she has signed: “Yours truly Maggie Mitchell, Elberon (New Jersey) Aug.13, 1891.” In fine condition. This is the first visiting card of Maggie Mitchell we have seen. In F.C. Chang’s popular two hundred seventy-one page book Visiting Cards of Celebrities a visiting card of Maggie Mitchell, even one unsigned is noticeably absent.........$275.00
