CHOICE Content of J.F. Millet on the Death Of His Friend Theo. Rousseau
MILLET, Jean Francois (1914-1875). Famous French landscape painter of the Barbizon School. Especially noted for his masterpiece The Angelus. In 1890 The Angelus sold for $150,000. Autograph letter signed, one full page, Barbizon, Dec. 22, 1867. To “My Very dear Friend”. We quote the letter in full: “Our poor Rousseau died this morning at nine o’clock. Although we expected it, as the physician said the end could not be far off, we were non the less overwhelmed and knocked up. His funeral is to be next Tuesday, the burial to take place at one o’clock precisely. If you can, come. We embrace you all. J.F. Millet.” A very fine example of a desirable autograph with excellent content of one major artist referring to the death of his dear friend Theodore Rousseau, the noted French landscape painter and leader of post-impressionists and identified with the Barbizon School. A scarce example. Together with a printed portrait of Millet which was drawn by himself in 1847......... SOLD
