Rare 3+ Page ALS From Menotti to Noted Author Glenway Wescott
MENOTTI, Gian Carlo (1911-2007). Italian American composer and conductor. He wrote operas before he was fifteen years old. In 1951 he wrote the first opera to be written for television in America. Winner of the Pulitzer prize. Autograph letter signed, three and one half pages to the noted author Glenway Wescott. On the imprinted letterhead of “Cunard White Star, R.M.S. Berengaria” dated on the lower portion of page three in another hand “1 June 1937”. Excellent content he writes in part: “...if only God had assisted e a little in my helplessness during this last two months...” Menotti goes on to quote Anatole France, in French, then continue...” So I was left helpless, and you know what a fatiguing and difficult job it is to rest on one’s laurels-though you don’t know how uncomfortable besides, when the laurels are of as thin a wreath as mine…all I can tell you about your ballet sketch is that Sam has jealously taken it with him I haven’t been allowed even to look at it. I do suppose he knew that you expected him to get in touch with you before sailing-I will let you know something soon. Menotti continues: “I am sorry too that we haven’t seen more of each other-I have always felt very much intrigued about you-not because of your being great writer, they are never intriguing, but because of your tartar face and your impeccable full dress-Please give me a chance next year...” Excellent condition and signed in full......................$750.00
