Prime Minister of France On His Only Trip To Israel
MENDES-FRANCE, Pierre (1907-1982). Decendant from a Portuguese Jewish family. French statesman, during WWII after France surrendered to Nazi Germany he was arrested and sentenced to 6 years imprisonment. He escaped and reached Britain where he joined the Free French forces of Charles DeGaulle. Served as Radical Socialist Prime Minister of France (1954-55). In 1956 he served as Vice-Premier under M. Mollet. Hotel restaurant check from the Pal Hotel, Tel-Aviv dated Nov. 20, 1977. Signed in Hebrew by Mendez-France during his only trip to Israel.
