Officer Who Seized the Amistad
MEADE, Richard Worsam (1807-1870). American Naval Officer, Served his first duty aboard the Brandywine in the Pacific (1827-1830). Commander of the San Jacinto (1864) which was wrecked and lost on a Florida reef. Best known as an Officer aboard a revenue cutter, the USS Washington. On August 26, 1835, Lt. Meade spotted the Amistad after the slave revolt on that ship. Meade and some crew members went aboard the schooner and seized the ship. Later, Meade and another claimed salvage rights over the contents of the ship, including the slaves. A choice signature “R.W. Meade” adding “Comm USN” in his hand. A scarce signature. Together with a fine portrait of Meade, half length pose in uniform. A fabulous combination for framing................ $250.00
