Scarce Telegram, A.L.S. William McKinley

McKINLEY, William (1843-1901). President of the United States (Mar. 4, 1897-1901). Assassinated by gun shot. Seventeen days after inauguration, McKinley sends this telegram. On the imprinted Executive Mansion, Washington, Telegram, (stamped March 31, 1897) McKinley writes in pencil: “Col Myron T. Herrick, Cleveland, O-  I know nothing about the singer, but upon your recommendation we will have her here on Wednesday evening. Mrs. McKinley and I would be glad if you & Mrs. Herrick would come come on Tuesday or Wednesday & be our guests for a little visit. We have every provision for you. William McKinley.”  Myron Herrick was a Republican from Ohio who groomed McKinley for the Presidency. Later he became Governor of Ohio. Telegram tipped to an official Western Union Telegraph Company form. Handwritten letters by McKinley for a telegram are quite scarce
