Only American Airman to have “Ace in a Day” Status Twice
McCAMPBELL, Capt. David (1910-1996). U.S. Navy Captain, Flying Ace, and recipient of the Medal of Honor and at least 17 other awards. U.S. Navy’s all-time leading flying Ace credited with 34 aerial victories. During 1944 he shot down 9 enemy planes in one mission. On June 19, 1944 and October 24, 1944 he became Ace in a Day, one time was during the during the Mariana Turkey Shoot. The captain was a friend, and I attended his very small birthday party at the West Palm Beach VA Hospital. Hanging over his bed was a framed picture of Franklin D. Roosevelt pinning the Medal of Honor on Capt. McCampbell. Months later I purchased most of Capt. McCampbell’s personal collection, but he wouldn’t part with that photograph. Poster in color by the noted artist R. Grinnell (1933-2019). Copy number 809 of 1250 signed by both the artist and McCampbell in pencil. This is American Fighter Aces, Series Number One: “UNLUCKY SEVEN, NINTH VICTORY, JUNE 19,1944, Near GUAM M.I.” In near fine condition, ready for framing...........$185.00
