A Tribute to John McCain

McCAIN, John  (1936-2015)  American statesman, naval officer who represented the state of Arizona in Congress for over 35 years. He was the Republican nominee in the 2008 U.S. presidential election. He was a Viet Nam war era POW.  In 1967 his plane was shot down after dropping bombs over Hanoi on the Vietnamese. Seriously injured he was captured by the North Vietnamese and taken to Hoa Lo Prison where he was tortured and spent much time in solitary confinement. He spent five and a half years as a prisoner of war. Hoa Lo Prison is also known as the Hanoi Hilton. Loosely translated is “Hells Hole.”  Built by the French is was known as “Maison Centrale.”

Offered is a collection of material that would form a nice presentation in a library or museum or private collection.

a) A typed letter signed “John” on United States Senate letterhead dated August 2, 2006.  A nice letter of appreciation of support of McCain’s efforts in the Senate….”and that you have found many of my views to be consistent with your own. I value your words of encouragement and support. They mean a great deal to me….”

b) His book:  Faith of my Fathers.  2008 Random House Edition, beautifully signed on the front endpaper.

c) A fabulous piece of art, measuring 8”x10” in color of the entrance to Hoa Lo Prison made entirely of grains of rice. Attractively framed. A museum piece.

d) Two colorful entrance tickets to Hoa Lo Prison.

e) A choice piece of red brick measuring appx. 2”X2” and 1.75” thick from Hoa Lo prison.

f) A photo of Steve Koschal holding this piece of brick outside Hoa Lo Prison.

g) Four pieces of bark from the famous Almond tree still growing inside Hoa lo Prison. This tree was popular amongst prisoners as it was the area where prisoners gathered to collect almonds, they also made medicine from the tree and carved chop sticks from the branches. This tree was known as “Bang.”  Its leaves were used to make Jello.
